Hey Mark,

I'm glad you're back to writing and targeting the CV topic, as mentioned in your previous comments!

I think your examples are great for understanding what 'results' are.

However, if you never really thought about quantifying your work results in previous jobs and were more focused on being 'responsible for', it's kind of hard to change that mindset since you probably never measured those numbers. And now you dont have the possibility to do so.

What would you recommend for those situations?

Really good question. As it’s hard to travel back in time. The future focused coach in me thinks “ah ha there’s a lesson in there for career planning and your performance review this year :)” but it is also a mindset that’s worth practicing.

But to answer your question - I’d focus on the last five or so years. That’s the most important stuff.

Sit down and try to get defensible points for each. You could comb your notes, reports, emails etc to see what you do have. You could also sit down with a previous colleague who and walk through each dot point.

I helped an ex-colleague and friend do just this last year. We talked through each project and reconstructed the impact. Some of it I had datapoints on, and some he did. It worked out well … and what was really important he had a real “spring in his step” when talking about what he’d achieved. Confidence in your impact is gold when looking for a new role
